Scope
The National Transmission & Despatch Company (NTDC) oversees Pakistan’s 500 kV and 220 kV power transmission networks. In 2019, NTDC faced a critical need to increase its 500 kV transmission capacity in Faisalabad to meet rising power demands.
Design Challenges
NTDC required urgent augmentation of the 500 kV system at Gatti Grid Station. The project involved manufacturing, supplying, and installing various panels and making modifications to existing protection schemes.
Solutions
EPESOL provided a comprehensive solution, adding one diameter in 500 kV and one bay in 220 kV. We supplied, installed, and commissioned all necessary panels and made essential system modifications. This intervention alleviated network congestion during peak loads, boosting industrial productivity in Faisalabad.
Scope
A private sector initiative, supported by the Pakistan Navy, conducted a survey of the Indus River Channel to evaluate its feasibility for transporting goods and passengers from Daudkhel to Attock, with plans to expand throughout Punjab.
Design Challenges
The project required detailed hydrographic surveys and the construction of a cargo ship in Daudkhel, Mianwali, despite the lack of shipyard facilities. Aligning engines with the stern tubes, tail shafts, and propellers posed significant technical challenges.
Solutions
The 14-man survey team evaluated safe navigational channels, while IWTDC established a hydrographic setup for bathymetric surveys. A 300-ton cargo ship, with twin 650hp engines and a speed of 12 knots, was designed and built by EPESOL using 125 tons of steel. The vessel will initially carry demonstration cargos between Daudkhel and Attock and later extend operations to Nowshera, contributing to employment and economic growth in the region.
The Sawan Gas Field, discovered by OMV in 1990 and producing gas since 2003, operated with five 3.2 MW generators (delimited to 2.6 MW) connected at the 3.3 kV level. The plant’s load varied between 5.73 to 6.0 MW, distributed across two trains serving two consumers.
The challenge was to optimize the operation by running only three generators simultaneously. However, tripping of one generator led to under-frequency issues and potential overloading of the remaining two, risking a blackout.
EPESOL engineered a state-of-the-art load shedding solution with a custom load-shedding panel using a Feeder Management Relay (F35, GE Grid Solutions). The solution featured a sophisticated boolean logic system that evaluated underfrequency conditions and generator statuses, executing a five-stage underfrequency load shedding with time delays. The system also assessed load distribution between the two load trains to determine the appropriate load to shed.
The load-shedding scheme significantly reduced operational costs and prevented blackouts, ensuring maximum production and efficiency at the Sawan Gas Field. The solution saved millions of dollars over its lifetime by avoiding costly cold start processes.
